Dialogue Table: online hate and discrimination

At red., we believe creators and media professionals are uniquely positioned to shape how we treat each other online. That's why we were proud to partner on the national dialogue on online hate, racism and discrimination, commissioned by the Dutch Ministry and carried out by Movisie, Public Mediation and Populytics as part of Praat Mee Met de Overheid #praatmeemetdeoverheid.

We identified and recruited a group of professionals and creators who, through their backgrounds and their work, face online hate and discrimination on a daily basis. We selected participants to make sure a wide range of perspectives would be at the table, and personally invited and prepped everyone to take part. Together with Public Mediation we designed and produced a physical dialogue session in Amsterdam, from A to Z.

On the day, we facilitated a safe space: a central location, clear ground rules shared in advance, and a setting where every story could be shared without judgment. Participants spoke openly about their own experiences and explored together which online norms, values and behaviours matter, and what actually helps when you see someone being discriminated against online. The outcomes of these dialogues feed directly into the national Plan of Action against online discrimination. We're honoured to have helped set that table.

To bring this conversation to a wider audience, we set up a social campaign with two creators, who shared their experiences at the dialogue table and invited their communities to take part in the national online dialogue themselves: anonymously answering statements on online hate and discrimination, that directly feeds the research.
