Our founder Indy Koele was interviewed by Merry Al Muhtaseb from LINDA.meiden about the inequality in the influencer world. As an agency with a mission to promote diversity and inclusion in the Dutch media landscape, we were delighted to be part of this conversation.
With a background in PR, Indy experienced first hand the inequalities within influencer collaborations, receiving feedback that their lists were “too diverse,” that they “had to be more Scndavaiain-looking” or that “there was no room for queer couples." Frustrated with the lack of inclusive spaces, Indy decided to create their own, resulting in red.
“red. wasn’t born out of anger, quite the opposite. I hope for a level playing field, that everyone gets the same opportunities, pay and resources.”
At our agency, advocating for fair pay is one of our highest priorities, as Indy recalls, in the past there has been up to a 50% discrepancy in offers between a Black female creator and a white male creator. Although, it’s not only about pay, it is also important to address the structural issues on how agencies operate, recycling the same “clique” of influencers instead of creating opportunities where new faces can gain visibility.
Fortunately, we do see a shift in how agencies and brands are operating now, but there is still a lot to learn and change.
